What Is a One-Time QR Code?

A one-time QR code — also called a disposable QR code, single-use QR code, or self-destructing QR code — is a dynamic QR code that becomes permanently inactive after its very first scan. Unlike a standard QR code (which can be scanned unlimited times by anyone), a one-time QR tracks its state server-side: the instant the first person scans it, the code is marked expired and every subsequent scan shows an "already used" message or redirect.

Because expiry is enforced on the server — not by cookie or IP address — it cannot be bypassed by clearing browser data, switching devices, or forwarding a screenshot. The code is simply burned, globally, after scan number one.

How to Create a One-Time QR Code in QRTRAC

Takes under 3 minutes. Works on any dynamic QR type — URL, coupon, PDF, and more.

1

Create any dynamic QR code

Log in to QRTRAC. Click Create QR Code in the sidebar and choose any type — URL, Coupon, PDF, Digital Business Card, or others. The Scan Limit setting works on all dynamic types.

2

Open Advanced Settings

On the creation or edit screen, expand the Advanced Settings panel. This is where GPS tracking, passwords, campaign scheduling, and scan limits all live.

3

Enable Scan Limit → set Scan Count to 1

Toggle Scan Limit to On. The Scan Count field appears. Enter 1. The helper text "1 = Single Use" confirms you've created a true one-time QR code.

Scan Count is enforced server-side. No device, cookie clearing, or VPN can bypass it.
4

Choose the post-scan action

Under When scan limit is reached, select one:

Show Message
Display custom text — e.g. "This voucher has already been redeemed."
Redirect to URL
Send late scanners to a page — e.g. qrtrac.link/USED-PASS
5

Save, download, and distribute

Download your single-use QR as PNG, SVG, or PDF. Send by email, embed in a confirmation page, print on packaging, or display at a counter. For per-person unique codes, use Bulk Create to generate thousands at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a one-time QR code?
A one-time QR code (also called a disposable or single-use QR code) is a dynamic QR that permanently expires after its first scan. QRTRAC creates these using the Scan Limit feature set to 1 — enforced server-side, not by cookie or device.
Is a self-destructing QR code the same thing?
Yes. 'Self-destructing QR', 'disposable QR', 'single-use QR', and 'one-time QR' all describe the same concept: a code that stops working after its first use.
Can I make a unique one-time QR for each person on my list?
Yes — use QRTRAC's Bulk Create feature. Upload a CSV with one row per person and QRTRAC generates a separate single-use QR for each. Each code has its own independent scan counter.
What happens when someone tries to scan an expired one-time QR?
You choose: display a custom message ('This coupon has already been used') or redirect to any URL — such as an 'Already Claimed' landing page. Both options are set in Advanced Settings.
Can I combine a one-time QR with a password?
Yes. Enable both Scan Limit = 1 and Password Protection in Advanced Settings. The QR can only be used once, and only after an authorised person enters the correct password — ideal for staffed redemption counters and event gates.
Do scanners need to download an app?
No. QRTRAC's one-time QR codes open directly in the phone's native browser using any standard camera app. No download or account required for the person scanning.
How is QRTRAC different from QR Planet for one-time QR codes?
QRTRAC's Scan Limit is enforced server-side with no workaround — it cannot be bypassed by clearing cookies, switching devices, or sharing screenshots. You also get full scan analytics, bulk generation for thousands of unique per-person codes, optional password gates, and campaign scheduling on the same QR.
Annual Plans Only — No Monthly Option

How Many One-Time QR Codes Do You Get?

One-time scan QR codes use the same plan quota as regular QR codes — but on annual plans you unlock 4× more codes than the standard limit, giving you room to generate unique passes at scale without paying per code.

Annual Plan = 4× Your QR Code Quota

Every annual plan includes 4× the number of one-time QR codes compared to the base plan limit. Create unique passes, coupons, and gift redemptions at scale — no per-code fees.
