Static vs Dynamic
The Final Guide.

Choosing the wrong QR code type can break a marketing campaign and waste thousands in printing costs. We’ve broken down exactly when to use each—and why QRTRAC supports both. Check out our detailed technical breakdown in the help center.

Static QR Codes

The data is "baked" into the pixels.

  • Permanent: They never expire.
  • Privacy: Data doesn't go through a server.
  • Fixed: You can NEVER change the URL.
  • No Tracking: Zero scan analytics.

Dynamic QR Codes

The data is a redirect link.

  • Editable: Change the destination URL anytime.
  • Analytics: Track location, device, and time.
  • Compact: The pattern stays simple and easy to scan.
  • ⚠️ Subscription: Usually requires an active plan.

When to use Static QR Codes

Static QR codes are best for permanent information that you are 100% certain will never change. Since the URL is hard-coded into the design, there is no "middle man" server. This makes them ideal for:

  • V-Cards: Physical business cards.
  • WiFi Passwords: For your home or office.
  • Personal Memorials: Linking to permanent tribute sites.
  • One-off labels: Where tracking isn't required.

When to use Dynamic QR Codes

Dynamic QR codes are the industry standard for professional marketing. They allow you to reuse a printed QR code even if the content changes. If you print 10,000 flyers and realize there's a typo in the URL, a dynamic code allows you to fix it instantly from your dashboard.

  • Restaurant Menus: Update your specials without re-printing.
  • Marketing Campaigns: Track which billboard or flyer is performing best.
  • Lead Generation: Gate content and capture user data.
  • Inventory: Link to dynamic status pages.

QR Code Generator FAQ

Can I use my own brand domain for QR codes?
Yes! QRTRAC allows you to use your own custom brand domain (e.g., qr.yourbrand.com) in QR codes. This increases trust and brand recognition. The custom domain feature is available on Business Plus and higher plans. Once connected, it takes about 30 minutes to start showing your custom URL.
Can I migrate my QR codes from another platform to QRTRAC?
Yes! If you are using your own custom domain on your current platform, migration is a straightforward DNS change. If you're using a vendor's domain, you'll need to set up a new custom domain and create new QR codes. We offer full support to help you migrate your campaigns seamlessly.
Is it possible to convert a static QR code to a dynamic one?
No. Static QR codes have the destination URL hardcoded into the pattern, while dynamic QR codes use a redirect. You would need to generate a new dynamic QR code to enable tracking and editing features.
Can I edit my QR code?
Dynamic QR codes can be edited at any time, but static QR codes cannot be edited once generated.
Can I track where my QR code was scanned from?
Yes, dynamic QR codes are trackable, and analytics provide geolocation and anonymized IP-based location data.
