How to Scan a QR Code on iPhone (No App Needed)

Gone are the days of downloading clunky third-party scanning apps. Since iOS 11, Apple has built QR code scanning directly into the core of the iPhone. Here's exactly how to use it.

Method 1: Using the Native Camera App (Easiest)

The fastest and most reliable way to scan any QR code is by using the camera app that's already on your home screen.

  1. Unlock your iPhone and open the Camera app.
  2. Make sure the camera is set to "Photo" mode.
  3. Point the camera at the physical or digital QR code. You do not need to press the shutter button to take a photo.
  4. Hold the phone steady. Within a second, a yellow box will appear around the QR code, and a yellow link bubble will pop up below it.
  5. Tap the yellow link bubble to open the destination in Safari (or the associated app).

Troubleshooting: Is scanning disabled?

If nothing happens when you point your camera, the feature might be turned off. Go to Settings > Camera and ensure the toggle for Scan QR Codes is switched to the green ON position.

Method 2: Using the Control Center Scanner

Apple actually built a dedicated "Code Scanner" tool into iOS that bypasses the Camera app entirely and opens links in an in-app browser. It's incredibly fast.

  1. Swipe down from the top-right corner of your screen (or swipe up from the bottom on older iPhones) to open the Control Center.
  2. Look for the icon that looks like a QR code. Tap it.
  3. Point the scanner at the QR code. It will scan and open the link instantly without requiring you to tap a yellow bubble.

Note: If you don't see the icon in your Control Center, you can add it by going to Settings > Control Center and tapping the green plus next to "Code Scanner".

Why are third-party scanner apps bad?

We strongly recommend uninstalling third-party QR scanner apps from the App Store. Many of these free apps are flooded with intrusive pop-up ads, malware, and aggressive tracking. They often try to trick you into expensive weekly subscriptions just to do something your iPhone can already do for free.
