Technical Intelligence

01 What is the difference between Code 128 and GS1-128?
Code 128 is a generic barcode symbology. GS1-128 is an application standard that uses Code 128 but adds specific formatting rules and 'Application Identifiers' (AIs) to denote what the data represents.
02 Do I need parentheses around my Application Identifiers?
In the human-readable text under the barcode, yes. However, when encoding the data into the barcode itself, you do NOT include the parentheses. QRTRAC handles this automatically.
03 Can GS1-128 encode batch numbers and expiry dates?
Yes, that is the primary advantage of GS1-128. You can concatenate multiple data points into a single symbol by using the correct sequence of AIs.
